Kendrick Continues Dominant Spring

by Anthony J. Machcinski

Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick continued to push his bid for the 5th starter for the Phillies this season today as the Phillies defeated the Houston Astros 8-7.

Kendrick, who allowed two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings, continues to drive his spring training ERA into the ground with a 1.37 ERA on the Spring. Kendrick is batteling Jamie Moyer for the 5th starters job this spring and has really made a case for himself.

Opposite Kendrick today was former Phillie Brett Myers. Myers, who spend eight years with the Phillies gave up three runs on 5.1 innings with seven hits. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told reporters before the game that he missed having Myers around the ballclub and that he hopes he does well, except when he faces the Phillies.

The offense found signs of life today off of centerfielder Shane Victorino. Victorino went 3-3 from the leadoff spot with one run, one RBI, and a stolen base. Victorino continues his spring season after being sidelined earlier in Spring Training with a sore hip.

As for Kendrick, fans and baseball personell alike can tell that he has benefitted from the presence of Roy Halladay. Kendrick has been Halladay's tail for most of Spring Training, and even arrives at the park earlier than Halladay himself.

If Kendrick does not make the 5th starter and is pushed down to the minors, his presence will be known as a good option in case one of the current starters gets hurt.
